Established in Memphis in 1932, Southern College of Optometry (SCO) is a nationally renowned private nonprofit educational institution offering a four-year post-baccalaureate program in optometry. With a total enrollment of more than 520 students representing 40 different states and Canada, SCO attracts the best optometry students to Memphis for their education.

SCO takes pride in its academic excellence and extensive pre-graduation clinical experience for its students. Since 2002, The Eye Center at SCO has provided care to nearly 50,000 patients each year in midtown Memphis. Open to the public, The Eye Center is the largest facility of its kind in the nation.

The college’s Clinical Programs reach thousands of additional patients through external programs, including vision screenings for schoolchildren throughout Shelby County. The college’s nursing home program takes geriatric care to seniors at more than a dozen facilities. The public also interacts with doctors and interns to learn more about eye and vision health through a number of special events that have been held in partnership with the Memphis Zoo, the Memphis Public Library, the Memphis Tigers and the Memphis Grizzlies.

New programs continue to expand the college’s impact, from one-day events to larger programs that help patients in need. External clinical care opportunities are reaching a variety of patient segments, including SCO’s University Eye Care, a full optometry practice located on the University of Memphis campus.

SCO also recently acquired the mobile vision exam unit called MobilEyes. The program uses a large recreational vehicle retrofitted with two complete optometric exam lanes and an optical materials display. The unit can provide comprehensive care to as many as 20 patients a day.

Recognized as one of the nation’s premier optometry colleges, Southern College of Optometry takes pride in the quality of the 21st century eye doctors who choose Memphis to receive their education. The expertise they gain here in Memphis is impacting the eye and vision health of the public across the nation as SCO’s graduates practice in all 50 states.
