FedEx Early Years

As a Yale undergraduate, FedEx President, Chairman, and CEO Frederick W. Smith outlined a system to accommodate urgent, time sensitive shipments. This system became the foundation for Federal Express, which today serves more than 220 countries and territories, including every street address in the United States. FedEx Express celebrated its first official night of operations on April 17, 1973 under the Federal Express brand in Memphis. Since then, FedEx has made Memphis its home, where its World Headquarters and World Technology Center now reside.

FedEx has been committed to providing innovative solutions and services to connect and empower individual customers and businesses around the world. Since those early years, FedEx has pioneered tracking and tracing capability, expanded its capabilities to include, ground, freight, forwarding, customs brokerage, and business solutions and made numerous technological contributions to the shipping world.
