The progress at Christian Brothers University builds upon a Lasallian legacy of service that began even before our founding in 1871 as the first college in Memphis. Since then, CBU has been dedicated to answering the call of this city.

Yellow fever was not a reason to retreat, but a reason to deepen our commitment. Civil unrest was not a reason to close our eyes, but a reason to open our doors. Educational challenges within our community are not a reason to pull back, but the reason we must push forward.

As the oldest university in Memphis, CBU has been a steady, supportive presence throughout our city’s brightest times and darkest hours. For more than 140 years, it has been our mission to provide a world-class, relevant education in a faith-based environment.

When Memphis calls on CBU, we respond. We always have. And now we are being asked to respond again. The call to demonstrate our Faith in Progress is loud and resonating, and CBU is responding. We’re responding with cutting-edge educational programming, both on our university campus and in partnership with middle schools and high schools throughout the city. We’re responding with an elevated level of engagement with our city, through community service and through collaboration with government, business and other civic organizations. CBU’s response is designed to create a stronger Memphis workforce and a more vital, vibrant community.

The Lasallian Brothers who founded CBU envisioned how their work could affect generations to follow. As their beneficiaries, we are called to build on that vision.
