Atomic Bomb Is Final Blow

August 15, 1945

Reporter John Carruth wrote how premature reports of a Japanese surrender spread quickly through downtown Memphis, only to be withdrawn, the assembling crowd deflated. And then…

Suddenly, a second horn shattered the silence, then another and another. They weren’t braying out bravado. Pure joy was in their voices and the pedestrians, veterans of many an emotional up and down, knew immediately that the war which had cost 55,000,000 lives was at an end.

Automobile traffic was shut off on Main Street between Adams and Beale as the celebrators took over the thoroughfare.

The front-page headline screamed the news: HIROHITO CALLS OFF WAR: ‘ATOMIC BOMB WHIPPED US’.
