Sounds Like Memphis

May 2, 1960

A blue note went up from a trumpet at Court Square yesterday afternoon and joined by others, swelled and wafted down Main and onto Beale to die and be born again at the bronze feet of W.C. Handy.

The white covering of the towering statue of “the Father of the Blues” before its unveiling gave some the exhilarating impression that Handy’s ghost was here at Handy Park for his own greatest tribute.

A crowd the like of which the park had never seen literally squeezed into the area to catch the colorful ceremony.

The entertainment that day: Mahalia Jackson sang the spiritual "Just a Closer Walk with Thee."
