In Tune

December 4, 1952

Here’s one sure way to get folks to dig a little deeper into their pockets for charity: Have the father of the blues, W.C. Handy, show up with his trumpet.

Hundreds of Memphians attracted to the scene by the band music, marching soldiers and the flashing of bulbs by photographers, turned after Handy’s salute and donated to the fund which provides the needy and unfortunate of Memphis with food at Christmastime.

W.C. Handy, father of the blues, stopped Dec. 3, 1952, to salute The Commercial Appeal-American Legion Christmas Basket Fund at the Park Lane Mile-O-Dimes booth. The composer was attending the annual Blues Bowl football game later that night at Melrose Stadium. (Charles Nicholas/The Commercial Appeal)
