A decade after TV came to New York, it arrived in Memphis, at WMC. It took a full hour to get all the preliminaries out of the way — test patterns, dedications, political proclamations and backstage tours — before Santa arrived on air to read a few of his letters from hopeful kids.

The CA, which owned the station, reported the premiere with considerable anticipation.

History is due to be made again tonight as pictures — as well as sound — wing their way over the ether … For those who have not purchased home receivers, television retail dealers throughout Memphis and the Mid-South area will invite the public to come to their stores and witness the program. Show windows of Main Street department stores will glow with television sets receiving the program, and large crowds are expected to gather before them.
