MIAMI — The lack of a suitable construction site in St. Louis and fears that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital would lose its independence prompted its board of directors yesterday to vote overwhelmingly to keep the pediatric research center a Memphis landmark.

And pending approval by state care regulators, St. Jude officials said they would undertake a multimillion dollar expansion of their research facilities in Memphis.

After almost 10 hours of closed-door deliberations, St. Jude founder Danny Thomas emerged and told reporters,

The board voted 30 minutes ago to not accept the invitation from Washington University in St. Louis.

Memphis Mayor Dick Hackett and county Mayor Bill Morris immediately began to hug …

“It has to be among the most rewarding moments in my life,” Hackett said.
