The newspaper has long relished its role as a government watchdog, but today’s wayward pols can count themselves lucky for not being lampooned on the front page as had been the practice. When The CA sued to gain access to records, suspecting three county commissioners pocketed $1,150.06 through phantom gravel shipments, the resulting story was accompanied by a stinging cartoon stretched across the front of the newspaper.
