Step Right Up!

March 15, 1851

Imagine, in this era, paying $20 for a concert ticket. But Memphians stepped up to see Jenny Lind, the so-called "Swedish Nightingale," perform at Odd Fellows Hall. Her promoter, P.T. Barnum, walked away with a big payday and The Appeal's account of the noted opera singer’s performance was drenched in sarcasm.

Well, the Nightingale has come, has caroled and flown. Barnum has made seven thousand dollars by the operation and the good citizens of Memphis are left to their criticisms, to compare notes and ascertain, if possible, the important fact whether they have received a quid pro quo; or in other words, whether they have been benefited to the amount of the price paid for their tickets.
