'Memphis Bill'

October 14, 1933

The greatest thrill I ever experienced off the playing field.

This statement, voiced in a manner that left no doubt as to his sincerity, by "Memphis Bill" Terry finished a befitting finale for the most stirring demonstration ever accorded an individual here. Terry, manager and star first baseman of the world champion Giants, returned in glorious triumph to his hometown and was greeted by more than 100,000 in a parade sparkling with tribute to sports "Man of the Year."

Terry is as close as Memphis has gotten to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Memphis Bill was inducted in 1954, but his nickname belies his birthplace; he was from Atlanta.
