Sheriff Ambushed

August 13, 1967

Legendary lawman Buford Pusser was rushed to Baptist Hospital in Memphis after being shot during an ambush in which his wife, Pauline, was killed. Pusser, the McNairy County Sheriff known for his one-man campaign against moonshine, prostitution and illegal gambling, was the inspiration for the movie Walking Tall. He survived the ambush but died in a 1972 car accident, after returning home from a Memphis news conference where it was announced he'd play himself in the movie Buford.
