Hotel History

July 5, 1899

A massive Fourth of July fire destroyed several businesses, including the 57-year-old landmark Gayoso Hotel overlooking the Mississippi River, leading to an estimated $500,000 loss. Because of high winds and low water pressure, The CA reported firemen "battled against adverse conditions of unusual and discouraging character."

The cause of the fire was unknown or, as the headline writer put it, Origin of the Conflagration Something of a Mystery.
