Doughboy Dedication

September 21, 1926

Thousands turned out in Overton Park for the dedication of the "Doughboy" statue.

Memphis turned back almost a decade yesterday afternoon, turned back to the fitful, feverish days of the World War, went back in grateful memory to the days when those whose names are engraved under that statue went overseas, to return no more.

Today

The Doughboy still honors “the memory of Memphis and Shelby County men who gave their lives to their country in the Great War.” This is part of the message enscribed, along with 230 names of the “1917-1919 Honor Roll,” on a plaque mounted to the base of the monument.
