Busing Begins

January 25, 1973

A pervasive calm and very light white student attendance ushered court-ordered busing into Memphis yesterday.

About 7,000 of the 13,000 eligible for transportation rode the buses yesterday. Most of those boarding the buses for their maiden runs were black.

School officials and police reported no incidents. Pickets walked in front of only one school, Trezevant High School in Frayser …

Mayor Wyeth Chandler, an outspoken foe of busing, said he was “proud of the city of Memphis.”

I’m very happy. The people in this city have reaffirmed my belief that although bitterly opposed to busing, they are equally committed to maintenance of law.

An absentee rate of 30 percent was recorded.
